Matters of the Heart

There are a number of actions one can take to prevent or control heart disease, but sometimes symptoms go unnoticed. In the absence of annual checkups, often the first sign of advanced heart disease is a heart attack.

Two years ago, Marvin suffered from atrial fibrillation — a condition that forced him to live each day in fear, never knowing when terrifying heart palpitations would strike next.

Four years ago, Robert had a major heart attack that killed all but 15 percent of his heart.

Vipal Sabharwal, MD

For Dr. Sabharwal, practicing medicine without compassion isn’t really practicing medicine at all.

“We’ve got to take the time to listen to our patients, talk to our patients and give them our full attention. That’s where compassion comes from.”

It was late summer and Diane was arriving at Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute for what she thought was just a routine office visit. But as soon as she walked through the door, the staff noticed she was very ill and would require immediate attention.

Like any 32-year-old woman who exercised regularly and maintained a relatively healthy diet, Andrea thought she was doing what she needed to do to have a healthy life.

“I never thought of myself as immune to anything,” she says. “But I certainly never thought I’d have a heart attack at my age with no risk factors.”

Charles Nelson, MD

Dr. Nelson attributes positive outcomes like Andrea’s not only to his team’s expertise and access to the latest technology, but also to their commitment to providing compassionate care.

Patricia credits Dr. Kapadia and his team at Bon Secours St. Francis for raising her awareness and helping her make important lifestyle changes.

Shaival Kapadia, MD

As a cardiologist and co-director of the Bon Secours Heart & Vascular Institute, Dr. Shaival Kapadia can’t imagine a more exciting career.
